Children in Europe Conference - 16 September 2010

Playing Outside
Play, nature and services for young children

A Children in Europe special conference in association with

Opportunities for outdoor play and activities contribute hugely to children’s
learning and creativity, social relationships and physical well-being. Nature
has been described as ‘the best environment for a child’s play’ enabling
children to explore their ‘possibility’ worlds. Research has shown that
children who play outside are more curious and physically healthier - and that the outdoor environment offers important opportunities for developing
relationships as well as encouraging a sense of independence and building
self-esteem.

This special conference explores some of the issues raised by Children in Europe’s issue ‘Playing Outside: why does it matter?’ which examines the use of outdoor space in services for children aged 0-10 years.

The conference will:
1. consider the importance of offering access to outdoor play and activities
2. hear about different models and approaches across the EU
3. discuss policy and practice implications
4. look at examples of best practice and innovation
